PREMIERE GALLERY: LORI PUTNAM - RECENT WORKS

A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Lori Putnam travels all over the world, painting small to medium-sized plein air sketches and finished works. She also creates large-scale paintings in her studio located in nearby Franklin, Tennessee. Prior to becoming a full-time artist in 2005, Lori owned and managed a successful graphic design agency for 13 years. Although Lori has had an interest in drawing and other art forms since she was very young, she considers herself self-taught, having studied independently as an adult with many of the nation’s best painters. Among them, Dawn Whitelaw, Quang Ho, Scott Christensen, and Kim English are a few she considers her most influential. In 2008 and 2009, she traveled to Italy for more than seven months with the sole intention of study, and growth. During this time she painted almost 200 pieces from the southeastern Adriatic coastline to the northeastern Italian Riviera and many towns in between. Her intense work during this period brought a greater maturity to the paintings she creates today. She enjoys sharing this growth with her students across the U.S., the Caribbean, and in Europe.
Lori is a member of, and has exhibited with, many respected organizations including the Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Oil Painters of America (OPA), and the American Impressionists Society (AIS). Lori was the 2011 Show Chairperson for AIS and became their Vice President in 2012. Additionally, Lori participates in several juried and invitation-only plein air events. Lori recently won awards in California, Wyoming, Florida, Georgia, and Ireland. Her work is in the permanent collection at The Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland, the Jack Warner Collection, the collection of Plein Air Magazine, and in private and corporate collections and galleries worldwide. Featured in numerous issues of American Art Collector Magazine, and most recently, Plein Air Magazine, Lori is recognized as one of the finest American Impressionists of our time. She will be serving as a mentor for Plein Air Magazine’s 1st Annual Plein Air Convention in Red Rocks near Las Vegas in April 2012.
The exhibit opens Saturday, April 7th and will hang through Friday, May 4th.  A reception will be held Saturday, April 7th, from 6 - 9 P.M.

ETHEL SMITH GALLERY

The Ethel Smith Gallery is located on the first floor at the Tennessee Art League. Artists exhibiting in the Ethel Smith Gallery receive a one-month solo exhibit. Exhibits for this gallery are juried yearly and open to TAL members only.

ETHEL SMITH GALLERY: PAINTERS FROM LIFE - AUGUST IN MAINE

This is a landscape exhibition and art sale by Nashville-area group 'Painters from Life':Jean Gauld-Jaeger, Shirley Fachilla, Gale Haddock, Jean McGuire, and Pat Mayo. The paintings were done “en plein aire,” a French term meaning literally “in open air.”  This group is dedicated to this creative process which usually begins with a pencil sketch, photos, and a small painting, done from nature and progresses to the finished pieces.
These plein air painters go back to their studios and, working from the visual information they have gathered on the spot and the sketches they painted,  produce larger and more detailed paintings.  These steps are an outline of this process and the actual execution may skip one step or another, depending on circumstances. All painters make the process their own.  Paintings in the exhibit range from very small to medium large, with subjects ranging from sunsets on a bay, to laundry drying, to a lighthouse in the mist, all done well by these seasoned artists.  Many of the artists belong to the Chestnut Group, a well-known Nashville landscape painting cooperative.
The 'Painters from Life' decided to go to Maine after one of their members brought some breathtaking  vacation photos to their usual Monday gathering. The images were so astonishing that the group began almost immediately to plan a paint-cation. They traveled to New Harbor, Maine last August and  began their work the next morning, standing on the granite rocks over the harbor entrance. They also visited the Farnsworth Museum to see the work of the Wyeth family of painters and stopped to take pictures of coastal life.  The group looks forward to returning to Maine soon. “Everywhere you look there is a painting, waiting to happen!,” said Gauld-Jaeger.
The show will open April 7th and will close Friday, May 4th.  A reception will be held Saturday, April 7, from 6 - 9 P.M.
